Self-guided Bike and family / Original tour

Italy / South Tyrol

Where hospitality is second nature

If a good break is long overdue but time is short, Nalles in Alto Adige (also known as South Tyrol) might just do the trick. As usual, your bike will give you the freedom to enjoy the Great Outdoors here – all in the knowledge that your home from home is a wonderful and welcoming hotel. We will sort out your routes and programmes – you just pick, choose and enjoy.
  • Day by Day

    1. Nalles
Individual arrival and first night. A firm favourite with nature lovers, Nalles is also known as "Rose Village" on account of the abundance of rosebushes in the area.

    2. Nalles – Bolzano (40 km or 20 km by bike + train) + cable car to Renon
From Nalles you head for Bolzano on your bike. The capital of the Alto Adige / South Tyrol region, Bolzano also represents the crossroads between the Italian and Germanic worlds – from culture and cuisine to history and language. The town's museum is also the home of "Ötzi" the Iceman, still going strong after 5,300 birthdays. From Bolzano, a scenic ride in a cable car whisks you up to the Renon Plateau, renowned for its Earth Pyramids, a natural phenomenon. Lying at the very heart of South Tyrol, Renon also offers some spectacular views across the Dolomites.

    3. Nalles – Merano (train + 25 km by bike)
A train hop brings you to Merano. The main spa town in South Tyrol, Merano has welcomed many a dignitary through the years to its thermal waters and temperate climate, among them "Sissi", Empress Elizabeth of Austria. While Art Nouveau has influenced much of the town's architecture, the spa building is a thoroughly contemporary affair: designed by Matteo Thun, it boldly reflects the surrounding mountainscape on its ample surfaces. The Terme offer wellness treatments using locally-sourced natural products and access to 25 pools, tubs and tanks (of which 15 are open year-round and 10 during the summer). If a wellness session comes high on your list, this is the place to tick that one off (but bring your bathers!). Back on your bike, you cycle through the Burggrafenamt district and along the Adige River cycleway – a landscape of apple plantations, vineyards and tiny alpine hamlets – all the way back to Nalles.

    4. Nalles – Silandro (train + 35 km by bike)
Once you have reached Silandro by train, you head once again for Merano, but this time along the Venosta Valley. These hillsides too are carpeted with apple trees and gloriously scenic, but the chance for more cultural discovery is never far: castles, museums and churches beckon, and why not take a second bite at Merano? If you opt for a session at the spa today, the train can ferry you back to Nalles with no further cycling. Alternatively, for a change of scenery you could catch a train from Bolzano to Bressanone, and then follow the Isarco River back down to Bolzano. Bressanone's Baroque cathedral is quite a gem, and the Augustinian abbey in Varna/Novacella makes for an unusual visit: while its library is reminiscent of a Harry Potter set and fascinates children and parents alike, the more grown-up visitor can also enjoy tasting some of Italy's finest white wines. The valley cycleway leads you past Fortezza and onwards down to Bolzano, where you can catch a train back to Nalles.

    5. Nalles
    After breakfast, end of tour.

Please note that although this itinerary is finely tuned, tried and tested, there may be circumstances beyond the control of Girolibero that require you to decide for yourself how to deal with them. Whatever changes there may be, however (whether due to the weather, local authorities or some logistical issue), please rest assured that this region is renowned for its outstanding cycleway network and abundance of options to suit all ages and interests.

      Online from 12 September 2016

Organizzazione molto buona, soprattutto per quanto riguarda tutto il materiale riguardante le biciclette. Assistenza telefonica tempestiva. Albergo piacevole. Gli itinerari sono giusti anche per famiglie con bambini.

      Departure 2016

      Online from 02 August 2016

Ci siamo trovati molto bene in hotel.
