    Individual arrival in Koblenz.

Your barge MS Patria will be waiting for you in Koblenz at 4 p.m. If you arrive earlier, you can leave your luggage on board (from 10 a.m.) and visit the city. We suggest you have a walk to the Deutsches Eck, where the Moselle meets the Rhine, or through the ancient streets with their churches, fortesses and squares. In the evening the tour leader will welcome you and introduce the journey in  detail both in English and German.

    2° Koblenz – Rüdesheim/Bingen (45 km - 28 miles).

The ship sails downstream the river Rhine from Koblenz to Boppard in the UNESCO heritage site Upper Middle Rhine Valley. From there you will cycle directly on the left bank along castles and through the Lorely valley. According to a medieval legend, this was the place where a fairy used to live, intoxicating people and causing shipwrecks and misfortunes. You will then continue to Rüdesheim, cycling through vineyards and the Niederwald park. You will spend the night in either Rüdesheim or Bingen.

    3° Rüdesheim – Mainz (35 km - 23 miles).

Today you will cycle from Rüdesheim through the beautiful Rheingau region, famous for the wine that is produced here, or on the quiet left bank to Mainz. Do not miss the timber houses with Renaissance and Rococo facades, the Gutenberg Museum and St Stephen’s church, with its beautiful glass windows by Marc Chagall. The Museum of Ancient Seafaring is worth a visit too: it will introduce you to the roman age, when boats and ships used to sail on the Rhine.

    4° Mainz – Nierstein (15/25 km - 10/16 miles).

Today’s cycling will take you via Laubenheim to Nierstein, the biggest vine growing community on the river Rhine, where you will re-join the MS Patria to enjoy lunch on board. Later in the day you will have the chance to join a very special excursion. Explore the vineyards with a tractor wagon including a wine-tasting and diner at the local winegrowers (optional excursion). Guest who will not participate, will have dinner on board.

    5° Nierstein – Heidelberg (25 km- 16 miles).

Today the MS Patria will take you along the Rhine and into the Neckar River to Mannheim where you will start cycling to Heidelberg, your destination for the day. Along the way you will pass through the Celtic city of Ladenburg, one of the most colourful and best preserved villages on the Neckar River. Heidelberg is a city that attracts tourists from all over the world. People come to visit Heidelberg Castle, the Old Neckar Bridge, the Philosophers' Way, the narrow, winding alleys of the Old Town, the numerous market squares and the city’s magnificent churches.

    6° Heidelberg – Eberbach (35 km - 22 miles).

After breakfast you will cycle from Heidelberg via Ziegelhausen through the low mountain range of Odenwald to Neckarsteinach - famous for the four old castles that guard the village – to your destination for the day, the historic village of Eberbach.

    7° Eberbach – Bad Wimpfen (45 km - 28 miles).

The first stop on your final day of cycling is Burg Hornberg (Hornberg Castle) in Neckarzimmern. A partially ruined castle yet the oldest one in this area, located on a steep outcrop overlooking the Neckar Valley. After visiting Burg Hornberg you will cycle to Bad Wimpfen, the destination of this tour. Make sure you explore Bad Wimpfen, a famous health resort on the river Neckar. The idyllic and romantic spa village is especially well-known for the warm, salty and revitalizing water that attracts people from Germany and beyond. The main sights are the Blue Tower, the ‘Steinhaus’ (Stone House) and the medieval old town.

    8° Bad Wimpfen.

After breakfast you will disembark, till 9 a.m. End of tour.

The itinerary may be subject to unexpected changes before and/or during your holiday, due to unforeseeable circumstances, such as: extreme weather conditions, unannounced road or repair works or law enforcements.

  • Route profile

The landscape in the the valleys of Neckar and Rhine is quite flat, middle to low difficulty for cycletourists. There are some ups and downs, but the route as a whole is simple. We suggest you do a bit of cycle training in order to deal with a six days-tour on the saddle and the short uphills. You will cycle mainly on bike path, sometimes unpaved, but of well-trod soil, as in the stretch between Mainz and Rüdesheim. Sometimes you might cycle on secondary streets with low traffic. The route from Koblenz to Mainz is well posted with green and white signals showing the distance in kilometers, or with blue signals with cycling indications. In the following stretches the signals will be different, but the maps you receive on board will help you.
