From Bad Wimpfen to Koblenz

Sailing on the boat Patria you will explore a landscape made of towering cliffs, steep vineyards, castles perched on virtually every hilltop and pretty villages lining the river banks, where history and nature mingle beautifully. Simply a romantic gem, waiting to be discovered by you on the best possible means of transport to truly savour it: a bicycle.
  • Day by Day

1° Bad Wimpfen: Arrival and embarkation.

The Patria awaits you in Bad Wimpfen where the crew will welcome you on board from 4 pm onward. Your first night will be spent in Bad Wimpfen, an idyllic and romantic spa village on the Neckar River well-known for the warm, salty and revitalizing water that attracts people from throughout Germany and beyond. The main sights are the Blue Tower, the “Steinhaus” (Stone House) and the medieval old town.

    2° Bad Wimpfen – Eberbach (45 km - 28 miles)

Today you will pedal to Neckarzimmern, where you can decide to either cycle or walk to Burg Hornberg (Hornberg Castle), where Götz von Berlichingen once lived. After visiting the castle you will continue to cycle to the historic and picturesque town of Eberbach, your destination for the day. While strolling through the winding streets and small squares, you can enjoy the serene life of the old city of the royal family: the Hohenstaufen.

    3° Eberbach – Heidelberg (35 km - 22 miles)

Your first destination today is Hirschhorn – the “Pearl of the Neckar valley” – situated on a horseshoe bend on the Neckar River. From there you will cycle through the low mountain range of Odenwald to Neckarsteinach, then via Ziegelhausen to Heidelberg where the Patria will be waiting for you. Heidelberg is a city that attracts tourists from all over the world to visit the Castle, the Old Neckar Bridge, the Philosophers’ Way, the narrow winding alleys of the Old Town,  numerous market squares and the city’s magnificent churches. Definitely worth a visit.

    4° Heidelberg – Nierstein (25 km - 15 miles)

Make sure you cross the Neckar before leaving this morning for a perfect view of Heidelberg and its famous castle. Today you will cycle via Ladenburg, which was founded by the Romans, on to Mannheim where you will re-board the Patria for lunch and the journey to Nierstein, the largest wine growing community along the Rhine and a popular destination if you’re interested in exploring the vineyards especially on a tractor!

    5° Nierstein – Mainz (15/25 km - 10/16 miles)

Today you will cycle along picturesque cycle paths next to the Rhine up to Mainz, a city with a rich history dating back to Roman times. While you are there take the time to discover the city’s many churches, museums and monuments. The most important ones are the Dom (cathedral), the Royal Palace, the State Theatre, the Citadel and the monument of Gutenberg.

    6° Mainz – Rüdesheim/Bingen (35 km - 23 miles)

After  breakfast you will leave Mainz and pedal through the beautiful Rheingau region, one of 13 designated German wine regions, via the historic  town of Eltville to the picturesque village of Rüdesheim. Make sure you take a stroll through the famous Drosselgasse, the old town’s lane full of beautifully restored buildings. The Patria will berth for the night in either Rüdesheim or Bingen.

    7° Rüdesheim/Bingen – Koblenz (45 km - 28 miles)

Cycle on the left river bank to Boppard and enjoy the panoramic view of the unforgettable Upper Middle Rhine Valley, a UNESCO Word Heritage site. On your way you will pass castles and small burgs alongside the celebrated Rock of Lorely. In the afternoon, the Patria will take  you to Koblenz where the rivers Rhine an Moselle meet. You will spend your last night on board in this fascinating historic city, an important defensive and economic center for centuries. Highlights include the old castle of Ehrenbreitstein, which dominates the right bank of the Rhine, the 12th century “Alte Burg” Castle and old Koblenz town.

    8° Koblenz

End of your tour: Disembarkation after breakfast  approx 9.00 am.

The itinerary may be subject to unexpected changes before and/or during your holiday, due to unforeseeable circumstances, such as: extreme weather conditions, unannounced road or repair works or law enforcements.

  • Route profile

The landscape in the Neckar and Rhine valleys is quite flat, of middle-low difficulty for cycletourists. There are some ups and downs, but the route as a whole is simple. We suggest a bit or preventive training in order to deal with a six days-tour on the saddle and the short ascents. You will cycle mainly on bike path, sometimes unpaved, as in the stretch between Mainz and Rüdesheim, but of well-trod soil. Sometimes you might cycle on secondary streets with low traffic. The route from Koblenz to Mainz is well sign posted with green and white signs showing the distance in kilometers, or with blue signs with cycling directions.

  • How to get there

The precise point of embarkation will be written in the Final Document some days before departure. It will not be far away from Bad Wimpfen train station (about 200 mt).

    By plane
The easiest way to get to Bad Wimpfen is arriving in Stuttgart by plane. From the airport you can then take a train that in 2 hours and at least 2 changes will take you to Bad Wimpfen. Further information on
