    map

    1. Passau

Individual arrival in Passau. Don’t miss a stroll in the city centre and visit its dome famous for hosting the oldest pipe organ in the world.

    2. Passau – Wesenufer/Schlögen (45 km)

Your first cycling day will lead you through the Engelhartszell valley which had been chiseled in the Bavarian Forest. You will pass castles and quiet villages, the highlight being the Trappist convent of Engelhartszell, founded in 1293. You will cross the Danube by ferry by paying directly on the spot and reaching your hotel in Wesenufer or Schlögen.

    3. Schlögen – Linz (60 km)

Once passed Aschach, which once held a very important market, head to Eferding, reign of the Nibelungen, with its famous Stahemberg castle. The ancient Wilhering Cistercian abbey dominates this area and leads you nicely on to Linz. Visit its Baroque city centre and its huge square where is situated the Martinkirche, the oldest church in Austria, still beautifully preserved. You can also visit the botanic gardens, with over ten thousand plans varieties.

    4. Linz – Perg (45 km)

Today a 10 km detour has been planned in order to allow a visit to the Augustinian abbey of St. Florian a true jewel in Austrian Baroque style. From here continue to Enns the oldest Austrian town based on ancient Roman sites wit a Baroque and Renaissance heritage. From here you’ll cross over to Mauthausen (included) tragically famous because of the Holocaust during WW II. Cycle on to Perg where you will spend the night.

    5. Perg – Marbach/Maria Taferl (60 km)

Your cycling day will be immersed in the lush green landscape until you reach Grein. Before that you will admire what’s called ‘the eye of the needle’ a very narrow stretch of the the river, which used to be feared by sailors overlooked by the majestic castle tower of Greinburg. On the way to Marbach you will pass the Habsburg castle in Persenbeug. An organized  transfer will make you to Maria Taferl famous for its Baroque sanctuary.

    6. Marbach/Maria Taferl – Krems (50 km + 20 km by boat)

Today you will cycle to Melk and its famous abbey; from here you will sail along the Danube to Splitz (boat included). In Spitz your cycling tour continues through the Wachau valley covered in vineyards. Proceed  to the romantic Dürnstein hosting the castle where Richard Lionheart was imprisoned. Your destination of the day is Krems, a quiet town on the left side of the river where you can visit the museum of wine.

    7. Krems –  Vienna (45 km + 36 km by train)

Start your cycling day heading towards Tulln, which hosts the Egon Schiele museum dedicated to the famous Austrian painter. From Tulln we suggest hopping on a train straight to Vienna (ticket not included). The train from Tulln to Vienna runs every 30 mins until 6 pm. If you decide to cycle (+40 km) , you will cycle through the Wienerwald, the Viennese woodland before you reach the imperial city, where you will spend the last night of your tour.

    8. Vienna

End of tour after breakfast. End of services.

The itinerary may be subject to unexpected changes before and/or during your holiday, due to unforeseeable circumstances, such as: extreme weather conditions, unannounced road or repair works or law enforcements.

  • Route profile

The Passau to Vienna cycling trail along the Danube river is one of the most famous and popular ones in Europe, because of its lack of difficulty which makes it accessible to any cyclist. It’s so well sign posted that you will not get lost.

The Danube river will be right by your side to guide you all along anyhow. When you plan your visits to points of interest be aware that some of the villages on either side of the river are not very well connected as bridges and ferries  are not that frequent.
