Italy / Apulia

Unspoilt landscapes and local delicacies

Apulia is characterised by endless olive groves, long fields of grain and vineyards. You will start cycling in Matera, UNESCO world heritage site with its “sassi”, and arrive in Lecce, also known as “Florence of the South” because of its magnificent baroque architecture. This bike tour will lead you into a region of scenic beauty, whose principal characters are the wild landscape and the local delicacies.
  • Day by Day

    map

    1. Matera
Individual arrival. Over millennia, inhabitants of the region have carved dwellings directly into ravines and gullies made of tuff (or tufa), a characteristic honey-colored soft stone. These houses are called “Sassi”, today a World Heritage site.

    2. Matera – Gioia del Colle (35 km)
Today you will discover by bike the karstic landscape of a vast region called Murge and will finally arrive in Gioia del Colle, with its imposing Norman castle. According to a local legend, a noblewoman travelling through the Murge lost her precious necklace, which was found again in a place called “Gioia del Colle” since then (gioia/gioiello means “jewel”).

    3. Gioia del Colle –  Alberobello (40 km)
You will cycle to the famous “trulli”, which were generally constructed as dwellings or storehouses. Alberobello is situated upon two hills. On the eastern hill is the new town. On the western hill the trulli are lined up in an urban conglomeration, divided into two districts: Monti and Aia Piccola, both World Heritage sites.

    4. Alberobello – Ostuni  (55 km)
You will cycle through the countryside up to Ostuni, which is reputed as an architectural jewel, and is commonly referred to as “the White Town” for its white walls and its typically white-painted architecture.

    5. Ostuni – Brindisi (50 km)
Today you will finally reach the sea in the reserve of Torre Guaceto, with one of the best preserved Saracen towers.
At the end of the stage you will arrive in Brindisi, one of the most important Adriatic harbours in Roman times. A column indicated there the end of the Via Appia Traiana, which then became the Southern Via Francigena when pilgrims and crusaders embarked in Brindisi for the Holy Land.

    6. Brindisi – Lecce (60 km)
You will cycle across a vast wine-producing area, famous for red wines such as Negroamaro and Primitivo. Once in Lecce, you will meet another Roman column like the one of Brindisi. According to the inhabitants of Brindisi, the column of Lecce has been stolen from their hometown, while the people of Lecce say that the column is actually a present for them. Anyway, on this column you can now admire the local saint: St. Oronzo.

    7. Loop of Lecce (35 km)
Passing through the nature reserve “Le Cesine” you will arrive to the sea, with its long sandy beaches. Further on, you will reach the hamlet Acaya, built by the emperor Charles V. Its castle hides also a Byzantine cloister, which is older than the hamlet itself. Finally you will cycle back to Lecce for the overnight.

    8. Lecce
    Departure after breakfast.
